Character Name: Kawai Shizuka
Series: YuuGiOu
Gender: Female
Age: 16
Species: Human
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Appearance:
Shizuka is perhaps about 5'2 - 5'4, and very small-figured. She has long auburn hair that reaches her waist, with bangs framing her face; her eyes are large and brown. Her face is as cute as the rest of her, with a small nose, and a small mouth that almost always seems to be in a soft smile. Her usual attire is a pair of sneakers, denim shorts and a yellow T-shirt covered by a pink vest with white trim.
Personality:
Shizuka is a sweet, charming young lady who just wants everyone around her to be happy. She has several insecurities about herself, and is constantly trying to prove that she can stand on her own two feet. Still, she knows the difference between right and wrong, and when pressed far enough in the wrong direction, she will stand by her convictions fiercely. Even though she seems rather mousey at some times, she can also be incredibly determined and even brave when the situation calls for it.
Abilities: The ability to be adorable. Beware.
Weaknesses:
She's rather dependent, truth be told. Shizuka would never get very far unless she had someone helping her. This of course stems from when she was blind; as her mother's only daughter, she was coddled and led by the hand. Her brother's over-protective influence didn't help the situation, either. Soon after the surgery to correct her blindness, she began relying on him more and more for everything. She really does try doing things for herself, it's just she's not very good at it. Also, there's always the looming possibility of her blindness returning; she may or may not lose her eyesight at any given time.
Manhattanite or outsider? Manhattanite. Originally to visit a friend, Shizuka arrived in New York with her brother and his friends the night of the attack. She hasn't seen them since.
History: (manga canon, because I don't feel like getting into the Virtual World arc; also, any possible Yuugi-tachi applicants need not follow the last paragraph)
In the beginning, she and her brother Katsuya and their parents were a picturesque family, happy and together. They loved each other. Well, this is what Shizuka was led to believe, and indeed had believed. Some parts of her still wants to believe that they still could be a single, loving family.
When Shizuka was still a child - estimated about 5 or 6 - her parents divorced. Her father kept custody of Jounouchi, while her mother moved out and took Shizuka with her. Shizuka was devastated to have lost her only brother and best friend. Still, she grew accustomed to the way things were, never seeing her brother or her father, and continued living her life in the happiness of childhood.
And then theevil blindness came. Day after day, Shizuka's eyesight deteriorated. Eventually, she sent a tape to her brother to inform him of the situation; "Dear nii-chan, I'm pretty much fucked in the eye department. D:"
In a fit of gallantry, familial affection, and ridiculous luck, Jounouchi Katsuya set out to win the Duel Monsters tournament called 'Duelist Kingdom', coming miraculously in second place. With this new title (and a little help from a few friends along the way), he returns to Domino, Japan to save the light in his sister's life - 3 million yen and a complicated surgery later, Shizuka was prepared to see the world again.
For some reason, Duel Monsters tournaments occur every few days in Domino, and before Shizuka could properly thank her brother, by removing her bandages and looking him in the face, he had set out on another dangerous adventure with his children's card game, this time facing a more dangerous enemy; a man with Dissociative Personality disorder, a shiny stick that can control minds, and a grudge against Yuugi.
While her brother (with only half his conscioussness at his side) faces off against his best friend, Shizuka is still recovering and wishing she could see her amazing brother (while her brother's other best friend is pretending to be uber-awesome and impress the 14-year-old-girl - come on, Honda!).
Eventually, she just can't take it anymore, and sets out with Honda to find her brother. The two reach the city only to find there are people after them because of their connections to Jounouchi and Yuugi - they are saved by Otogi Ryuji, who not only saves the two from the Ghouls, but latches himself to Shizuka and provides Honda with a suitable rival.
Otogi, Honda, and Shizuka then begin wandering the streets in search of Jounouchi, where they run into Kujaku Mai, who takes them to the site of the duel between Jounouchi and Yuugi. After hearing the situation and learning that her brother is risking his life for his best friend, she gets the courage to remove her bandages and saves his life.
The rest of her role for the tournament from then on is rather low-key: a cheerleader for Yuugi and her brother, mostly, and a guard for Mai when she loses her mind.
A year later, and her brother and his friends have begun their lives away from high school. Anzu, as has always been her dream, has moved to New York to dance. Shizuka, her brother, and the rest of his friends had been visiting, intending to see her perform the night the monster attacked...
